A Trip Down Bayou

Selling a house down bayou isn’t easy these days. Sure, the home prices are pretty reasonable, but as waters rise, so do flood insurance premiums–if you can get a policy at all. That coupled with a long drive for modern conveniences, mean a low list price for most sellers. If you are aiming high, you have to take every advantage you can find and staging has a high return on investment.
I wasn’t sure what I was going to find when I headed down highway 56 to a mid-century ranch just across the highway from the bayou itself. I was delighted to find a little cajun gem belonging to the warmly welcoming couple that had owned the local dress shop. And luckily their home was full of character, we just needed to tailor it a bit. You can view the transformation below.
This picture window frames a perfect view of the bayou and we want people to feel like lounging in this room to enjoy it. We lightened and brightened–opening the curtains, adding a lamp, and removing shades from the chandelier. We also gave it an inviting layout anchored with a rug. This image isn’t doing a thing to highlight the kitchen’s features. After editing countertops and lighting, this space feels bigger and more inviting. A big room, but this family space dark and blocked. Now this room feels alive–the perfect place for hosting large parties. A conversational furniture arrangement makes the space usable on the daily too. This bathroom feels like a dark and cramped. Using all the lights and placing white towels on the stand beneath the window draw your eye through to the back of the room making the room feel larger! This room needs more than bedding to feel comfortable. Art and furnishings make the room feel cozy, and their placement transforms the bumped-out wall into a feature. The state of this bedding and lack of light are distracting and disquieting. A few small tweaks create a light and relaxing Master bedroom. Without a window, this room is technically not a bedroom. So what value does it offer a buyer? Creating a workspace with desk, art, lamp, and shelves gives purpose to this previously anonymous space. This room feels like a storage space where unused furniture collects dust. This bonus space just off the carport entry was transformed into a sitting room, the perfect place to put on your shoes before heading out door or lounge on the sofa with a good book.
